Changes that schools should make:

Most kids don't like music classes and certainly don't find them cool and enjoyable, and band kids are ripe for getting picked on.
But a large part of school curriculum are to prepare students to be better prepared for adult life, right?
Music classes offer a ton of instruments for students to learn and rent, mainly classical.
Why don't they have guitars, bass guitars, drum kits, and singing (for genres other than Dolly Parton)?
Statistics show that Entertainment is one of the largest, most successful categories of USA exports. Wouldn't there be much higher potential of successful adults if the majority could always fall back on performing rock songs, or other popular genres, such as FM radio exposure?

Good for you for taking up a more serious topic... I tend to agree but can't be sure of what the hell is going on in schools nowadays let alone music... A great many kids lack enough discipline to learn a musical instrument these days... plenty of schools have just gotten rid of a music program at all no need to develop the creative side of the brain if there's just going to be a life of economic slavery ahead...

It was alot different back in my day... back as a Freshman in HS I worked nights on weekends janitorial to eventually buy a bass guitar & amp then listened-jammed to records to train the ear (most important really even today listening I am decompiling chords-melodies in my head) then joined Band & StageBand in HS though I played upright bass in Band that they already had there...

OK maybe at this point some might think I'm bullshitting as I was a HAM operator too but wait, also a comic book artist... The reason I could do all these things was that my parents had got rid of the TV set back when I was in 5th grade... Even when later on I'd see it at friends homes it all looked fake & stupid by then...

But kids nowadays have way too much screen stimulus which doesn't help, the food supply is pure shite as well the last time I saw school cafeteria food (2009) I just about soiled myself plus parenting sucks nowadays as nobody beats their kids asses for acting up thus they become adult adolescents who live stream temper tantrums...

I was nodding my head to each sentence of yours that I read. It's a wonderful feeling to have our eyes opened and see the hands pulling the puppet strings. It's amazing to see how stimulated the rest of the brain becomes without TV. I'm just surprised you learned so much about computers and video games.
adult adolescents who live stream temper tantrums...
and get paid for it

Well, I don't know much about computers not nearly like you do & I apologize for going too far off topic... Fact is that if schools were teaching JUST music but decent music & forget all the social engineering classes that would be great, who cares what instruments any of them wanna play... Keep them away from internet/smart phones/TV at all costs lest the mentality mimic Idiocracy (2006) which is already happening...

You're the only other person talking. Feel free to talk about anything you like LOL perhaps I should have stayed in the Hmm Off Topic thread. I freakin love that movie, I've told people it should be required watching in schools. It teaches very important facts, and treats you like you have a brain by letting you draw your own parallels and conclusions, and it's got wonderful humor, entertainment, pacing, and a talented cast, and the guy gets the girl!! Two thumbs way way up.

While growing up, everyone told me I should go to college for a computer-related degree and make a career out of it. I always turned that down, because I enjoy using computers so much at home for relaxation and entertainment: mainly music, some games/movies/shows/software. I didn't want to add another 8 hours a day staring at a screen and then despise the home computer.

I unearthed and watched Idiocracy again a few days ago, and didn't find it that fun anymore: 20 years ago it was a great witty dystopic SF movie, today it's just a documentary... :(:(
