If you're comparing what you have now to something you had before, then
drivers and accompanying software differ from manufacturer to manufacturer.
What you describe sounds like vaguely like a Soundblaster control pannel.
If you haven't already done it, download and install the most recent drivers
from the Dell website. Check there also for addons. Alson try Googling for
"Sigmatel Addons" and see what it throws up. I tried and there appears to be
a free suite (whatever that means) available.
IIRC, there should be a Sigmatel icon in the systray, try double clicking on
it and see what appears.
On board sound is very basic normally, a USB Soundblaster would give you
much more options to play with. If ever you go down that route remember to
turn the onboard sound off in the BIOS before installing a soundcard.
