virus damage

I had the System Restore virus on my pc. Used Malwarebytes to get rid of it but now when I click on start-run-all programs, everything shows as "empty". I ran an unhide program that ran in a small dos looking window. It fixed some other issues with my desktop icons but I can't open anything from the all programs window. I am running xp srvc pk 2. Another forum said that I need to upgrade to srvc pk 3 which is probably true but I don't see how this will fix my current problem.
