    Hi!

I've used XP SP3 for ten years, lately had problems, tried to switch to 8.1 Didn't like at all!

Reinstalled XP and so far everything OK. Except before I could place desktop icons anywhere, now whey go in a rigid grid. I use Windows classic theme.

I can even run previous installation in old disk, don't see any difference in setting using properties of desktop.

    Any ideas, you XP experts.

    Thank you.

I had this (on new install) issue where icons were arranged 'aligned to grid' but that setting was NOT checked. I CHECKED it, ok Started over & UN-checked it, then it worked ok.

Also, the same issue with 'auto arrange':
