either will run, the problem is getting one that will be still updating for xp after 2016.

I do not like either, I use 360 total security free, from qihoo.

Avast, 'cause it's free, reliable and 'cause I'm a beta tester xD

Anyway, with Avast free antivirus you will have the possibility to scan for outdated software and update them directly from the avast gui, a secure browser provided by avast and made from chromium sources, the possibility to save all your passwords and encrypt them and, last but not least, a sandbox where you can run every program you believe it's faulty or dangerous. ;)
Oh, almost forgot, you can run a boot-time scan, which means avast will reboot your computer and run under DOS in order to remove even the worse threat (virus, spyware, rootkit, trojan, malware, worm, grime).

Keep it simple, join avast! ^_^ Link

Use Microsoft Security Essentials version 4.4.304.0, if you can find it. Microsoft pulled it from their servers but this version will update itself (the definition files) until 2020.

Been using Comodo's free AV suite for years. Never had any problems with it.

Just make sure you disable all the dozy 'pop-ups', and uncheck 'Install GeekBuddy', and 'Install Dragon' ( or Chromodo, as it is now....their high-security version of Chrome, which runs like a slug), and you're good to go. Works well.

    Mike. ;)
