I just installed adblock (freeware) from
http://simple-adblock.com/
and turned off the IE popup blocker
Now IE8 loads much faster and also catches popups that the IE popup blocker
was missing

I use Google Chrome. Got Firefox too but hardly used it since I
installed Google Chrome.

You need IE for Windows Updates though!

Not on any computer I've ever encountered. I prefer Firefox, but it
always takes significantly longer to start up than Internet Explorer.

It's all those SQLite databases, inside the browser. The URL
cache uses one.

Could be. The bookmarks uses one, too. However, it was slow to start up
even in the early versions before they started using SQLite.

No matter to me - I still like it and the startup speed isn't really a
concern.

As you say later - startup speed isn't really a concern for me too. As a
matter of fact, startup speed is almost instantaneous for me, because I always
keep at least one FF window open, so when I open another one, it pops right up.
What I have noticed, however, is that IE /runs/ significantly more slowly
than FF, and hogs the CPU more. That's why I only use it on pages that don't
work with FF, like W/M update.
(Oh. Maybe I should revise that. I notice that the thread mentions IE8, but I
have explicitly unchecked it from updates, and still run IE7. Is IE8 faster than
IE7? Is it safe to install IE8, if that's the case?)
