My cd burner is not recognized by windows media player 11 or windows explorer
or my computer....so i can't burn anything to a cd through those...but my
roxio application recognizes it and i can burn music through it, i'm just
used to using windows media player to make cds and such. i noticed this
problem a couple months ago....i have used WM11 tons of times in the past to
make cds (and windows explorer, too)....a computer tech told me i'd probably
have to do a non-destruct recovery (if i was lucky it might work)...if it
didn't i'd have to do a destructive recovery and reload tons of software i've
added to my computer, which i've already had to do once and never want to do
again.

Right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > click
on the + sign next to DVD & CD Drives (or similar) > is your drive
recognised by Windows ?

If so, right click on it then select un-install. Then reboot and let XP
re-discover it on boot up. Did that work ?

If not, try this : right click on My Computor > manager > Services and
Applications > Services > look for IMAPI Burning ROM Service (or similar).
Is this service stopped or on Manual ? If either, change to automatic >
right click on it > Properties > change Start up Type.

Some software does not like co-existing with the XP burning service (Nero
for example to name but one. Roxio possible, I don't know I don't use it..
You should use one or the other, not both. If you purchased Roxio, disable
the IMAPI XP service and just use Roxio. You may have a conflict. Did this
p^roblem start when you installed Roxio, if so, htere is your problem and
answer !

BTW, your computer tech told you a load of bollocks.

Cheers,
Jerry

I too have lost the capability to burn cd's on WM11. I used to burn them for
my car and work all of the time. I can't figure out what happened but it now
says "connect a burner and restart..." I tried going back to WM10 becuase I
used to burn from there and it says the same thing. I guess I'll have to buy
software now just to burn compilations of music I already own for my car and
work. I don't have time to change cd's after hearing one or two songs from
each, so it was nice to make my own with all of my favorites on them. Oh
well......

I'm trying this now...gonna reboot to see if it worked or not. I didn't have
an issue burning until after I installed itunes (only because I'd been given
a gift card) once downloads were done I uninstalled itunes and now I'm having
all these issues. I hope this works. Thanks!

XP doesn't recognise your burner, yet you can burn using Roxio ...... hmmm.
At least your burner is OK. Does it show up in Windows Explorer - it must do
if Roxio burns with it.

If we assume that WMP is the culprit, there is no real cure for this
unfortunately. Here are a few "work arounds" :

You could try using different media (another make of CD-R's) but no
guarantee.

You could roll back to WMP10 (Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove
Programmes > uninstall WMP11) but again no guarantees.

You may have a conflict between WMP and Roxio, so either you un-install
Roxio or you turn off the IMAPI Burning ROM service (right click on My
Computer > Management > Services, find IMAPI etc, stopr it and then set it
to manual).

Right click on My Computer > Prperties > Harware > find your Burner >
Uninstall it, then turn off your PC, open it up and unplug your burner (here
I'm assuming you have a desktop) then re-boot. Turn off your PC again and
re-connect your burner, boot up and let XP re-install it as new software.

You don't need to do a total reinstall or anything like what your computer
geek suggested.

If after all this it still doesn't work, I suggest you continue using Roxio
or this freeware :
