Windows XP Home
SP3
IE 8
Outlook Express
Office 2003
AVG anti-virus

I am trying like crazy to fix a problem my step-mom is having on her
computer. She is unable to insert a jpg (or any image) into any program on
her computer. She can't do it in Outlook express (although she can go to
windows explorer and right click on a picture and send one at a time that
way).

She can't insert picture from file into Word, Print Shop or anywhere
else that she needs to. each time she tries, the program freezes and she has
to shut it down through task manager.

I thought i had this fixed a couple weeks ago when i
had her go in to her file associations (control panel) and i walked her
through making sure her jpg was associated with an image program (jasc paint
shop). then everything was working fine for a couple weeks and then last
night she went to insert pictures from within outlook express and she had the
whole same problem again. She is also unable to copy and paste a picture into
any program. I had her go back in and we associated the jpg's with Irfanview
to see if this would work, but it didn't.

Staples store told her it was a windows update thing, which i figured was
there way of blowing her off, but now I am wondering if this is a windows
update thing (as she had just done that this week)... it' seems like a file
association thing. She has her windows updates run in the background so she
is up to date on that.

I am trying to do this over the phone, she's 75 years old, needs her
computer to do her church newsletters, etc. I'm pulling my hair out. I can't
find anything about this anywhere on
the net. I've had her check for viruses, I've had her run crap cleaner and I
am so hoping someone can help me with this?

thanks in advance,
JD

I don't know but googled:update .jpg freeze and the first thing that came up
indicates other things she may have installed, like Office, might be
involved. Staples may have been correct. Suggest posting in the xp.general
group.
Good Luck.

Thanks, I have tried everything with the help of some really nice people on
the newsgroups...

We did find a trojan today called fakealert, so after reading about it,
I have told her she is going to have to take it somewhere for professional
help as i think she will end up having to wipe it and start over...

thanks for all the help and suggestions!
