Can't access Windows Update

I am using Windows XP Pro and IE 8. Each time I go to All Programs > Windows
Update, I get a blank page. If I Google "Microsoft Windows Update", I get a
message thanking me for using Windows Update and that I should make sure that
my computer is set to receive updates. But I am not able to access the
Microsoft Update page where they check your computer to determine if it is
up-do-date. I do not know what the problem is. Any suggestions on how I can
resolve this problem will be appreciatetd. Thank you.
